Description:
Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc. Very few foods contain Vitamin D, synthesis of Vitamin D (specifically cholecalciferol) in the skin is the main natural source of the Vitamin. Dermal synthesis of Vitamin D from cholesterol is reliant on sun exposure (specifically UVB radiation). In humans, the most important compounds in this group are Vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) and Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol can be ingested from the diet and from supplements. Vitamin D3 be taken at any time during the day but it is recommended that Vitamin D3 is supplemented with meals.
Research suggests that the true safe upper limit is 10,000IU/day (100mg of our Vitamin D3). For moderate supplementation, a 1,000-2,000IU dose of Vitamin D3 is sufficient to meet the needs of most of the population. The EU NRV for Vitamin D is 200 IU
